Our Canada: Opening Doors to Refugees through the Group of Five Program

DeVeraImmigration-Refugees

In other parts of the world, many people struggle to survive amidst great strife and hunger in places once known as cities now ravaged by war, with little to no opportunity to reclaim their lives and move past their heartbreaking circumstances. As such, countries like Canada have begun to recognize their good fortune and extend a helping hand, enabling these people to start a new life, while encouraging those who have already gotten in their start in the country to give back.

For this, Canada hosts the Group of Five (G5), a unique refugee sponsorship program that allows Canadian citizens to give back and pay it forward to their community.

What is a Group of Five?

A Group of Five (G5) is composed of five or more Canadian citizens or permanent residents who can arrange to sponsor a refugee living abroad to come and begin a new life in Canada.

Are We a Qualified Group of Five?

Each member of a G5 must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident at least 18 years of age;
  • Live in the same community where the sponsored refugee is expected to settle and start building a new life; and
  • Agree to give settlement support for the entire duration of the sponsorship, usually a period of one year.

To ensure a smooth transition into life in Canada of your sponsored refugee, your group must provide a settlement plan. Through this, you must be able to prove that your group has enough resources to sponsor a refugee’s living expenses and needs for one year. This amount may vary depending on how many refugees your group sponsors.

There’s no better time to give back to your community, and pay it forward by giving others the same fighting chance you have at building a better life in this great country. Call us at +1 604-917-0355 to learn more about this opportunity to give back.
