Caregivers are an indispensable part of any household, especially in a high-powered economy such as Canada, where families tend to be smaller, and fewer and farther in between. For this, many Canadians are looking for warm, compassionate, and easygoing individuals who can help them care for their loved ones and form part of their family.
If you are a potential employer looking to welcome a caregiver into your family, you know well that finding one is like looking for your match: the road to meeting a caregiver whom your family forms a bond with is long and paved with challenges, but learning the process inside-out helps point you toward the right direction, and ensures that your family really can welcome a caregiver you trust and can rely on. Learn how you can sponsor a foreign caregiver to come to Canada.
Caregiver Application Programs
Aspiring caregivers to Canadian families can apply to work with a family in the country, and in the process, earn a permanent resident status. Eligible caregivers can apply through the following programs:
- Caring for Children Program, if they have provided full-time child care at home in Canada for at least two years in the past;
- Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program, if they have been employed in Canada for at least two years as a registered or licensed practical nurse, home aid support worker, or nurse aid/orderly.
Hiring a Foreign Caregiver
Often, many families in Canada hire foreign caregivers to help take care of their loved ones and provide the warmth and comfort they need, owing to rich cultures of hospitality foreign caregivers bring with them from different parts of the world.
If your family here in Canada is in the process of considering hiring a foreign worker as a caregiver, it’s important to continue your search and application process with these conditions in mind:
First, it’s important to try to hire a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for the job. If unsuccessful, you can apply for a permission to hire a foreign caregiver to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). In the process, you will be asked to detail your efforts in looking for a caregiver already in the country to justify your reasons for sponsoring a foreign worker.
Since it is your decision and preference to hire a foreign caregiver, it will also be your responsibility to find a foreign caregiver. You can use advertisements, personal contacts, or hiring agencies to find a caregiver.
The next step is applying for an LMIA to the ESDC. This confirms that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available for the job. A positive result authorizes you to hire a foreign worker. The result of the LMIA should also indicate the documents your family’s prospective caregiver needs to secure a work permit through a Canadian visa office outside the country.
When you find a foreign caregiver your family wishes to welcome, you must first get in touch with ESDC. If your future caregiver applies for a work permit and meets the program’s requirements, they will be granted a permit. It’s important to note that the process could take up to several months to complete, and your caregiver cannot begin working for you until their work permit listing your name as their employer is granted.
